University of Galway Rugby Club will hold a star-studded black-tie event at the Galmont Hotel this October to mark their 150th anniversary.

After the worrying nature of their loss to Wexford last week, the Galway senior hurlers have two games left to salvage their Leinster Championship ambitions, beginning up north at Corrigan Park to face Antrim this Saturday, May 18, with throw-in at 2pm.

Connor Gleeson was the hero in Pearse Stadium last Sunday in the Connacht Championship final. His last-gasp free won Galway’s third consecutive provincial title, as the Tribesmen now look ahead to the group stage of the championship.

Our first image today is a beautiful study of part of Shop Street c1900. It is one of a number of Galway city photographs that are in an old album belonging to Norman Healy whom we thank for sharing it with us. The two women in the foreground are in their working clothes, plain black shawls and práiscíns which were heavy canvas working aprons used to carry vegetables or maybe fish in, or wear when they were washing clothes. One is carrying a basket which probably contained product she had to sell, possibly eggs, country butter or vegetables. The other lady may have had a basket strapped to her back. The gentleman behind is wearing an impressive white báinín jacket.

The Alzheimer Society of Ireland is hosting the 30th Alzheimer’s Tea Day across Ireland and The Alzheimer’s Day Centre in Clarinbridge will join the celebrations with Tea Day on April 29 from 2pm to 4pm at the centre. The 30th anniversary is a significant milestone as statistics show that at least 30 people in Ireland are diagnosed with dementia, every single day.

Last month the Radiation Oncology team in the Galway University Hospital (GUH) marked a major milestone in the treatment of prostate cancer as the 1,000th patient underwent prostate seed implantation at the hospital.

Determined to extend their perfect start to the season, manager Phil Trill has demanded home support for Galway United Women against Bohemians. The game is this Saturday, April 13 at 5pm in Eamonn Deacy Park.
